Grading Criteria:
Formative Assessments are those that inform learning and do not significantly impact the report card grade. These assessments would be homework and quizzes. These experiences represent the necessary practice required to acquire a mastery of the theory and skills in each unit. Formative assessments are worth 10% of the overall grade.
Summative Assessments are those pieces of student work that allow the student to demonstrate their level of proficiency with the objectives in each unit of study. Unlike formative assessments, summative assessments are used to make a final judgement on the report card grade. Examples of summative assessments would include unit tests and experimental write-ups. Summative assessments are worth 90% of the overall grade.
Summary:
Formative Assessments (homework and quizzes) 10%
Lab Write-Ups (Summative) 20%
Tests (Summative) 50%
Final Exam (Summative) 20%

Absences
Following an absence, you will have the number of days you were absent plus one to complete an assignment that was missed. It is your responsibility to obtain the work. If you missed a lab, see me to arrange a make-up time or alternate assignment. Do not get behind in chemistry—it is very difficult to catch up once you are behind.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the act of representing words or ideas of another person as your own. It is unethical and non-academic. Consequences for plagiarized assignments may include, but are not limited to: an F for the assignment, an F for the course, and a letter in the student’s file outlining the offense.
Communication:
Please find me if you have questions. During the first semester, I will have a structured study hall supervision during the third period and a prep period during the fifth period. I will also be available before and after school. I will usually be found either in the classroom or the science office during the prep period.
