Hello,
Welcome to Fifth Grade. My name is Mr. Smith, and I will be your child’s teacher this year.
I have been in Deerfield since August of 2000, and have enjoyed every bit of my experience here. I am looking forward to another great year and am excited about bringing in a new group of fifth graders.
Our current class schedule is available on my website and is also attached. Please be aware that there may be changes as the year progresses.
In Math, we will be using Illustrative Mathematics. I enjoy teaching this new curriculum, as well as learning it along with my students. We will also continue working on our math facts using Reflex Math.
This year we will continue with our reading program, "ARC", American Reading Company. It incorporates large group reading lessons, with individual leveled reading chapter books. We are excited to continue this journey and are looking forward to getting all kids to enjoy reading!
We will continue to use Sitton Spelling lessons and tests. Students will engage in writing a variety of texts. Teachers will be using Mystery Writing to help guide the process which will focus on increasing writing skills by building these essential skills: *Topic Sentences *Expanding Sentences *Domain-specific Vocabulary *Direct Quotations *Complex Sentences *Personification *Similes *Character Traits *Revising Words *Paragraph Structure *Prompt Analysis *Setting Writing Goals *Peer Feedback *Independent Writing Prompts. Students will also be guided in the following writing genres through Mystery Writing:*Narrative *Opinion *Informative
In science, we will be using Mystery Science to cover the 5th grade curriculum. We will be studying: Ecosystems and the Food Web; Water Cycle and Earth’s Systems, Earth and Space Patterns, Stars and Planets, and Chemical Reactions and Properties of Matter.
My class will be going to Mrs. Wycklendt’s room for Social Studies this year. They will be studying: The Geography of the United States and Early American History up to the Civil War.
I will be sharing a weekly newsletter “A Look Ahead”, that will keep you up to date on what we are learning/will be learning about.
