Why is Physical Education Important to You?
There are many benefits to pursuing a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Habits developed early in life, specific to regular exercise, will carry over into adulthood. Kids who are active will:
-
Have stronger muscles and bones
-
Have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat
-
Be less likely to become overweight
-
Decrease the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes
-
Possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
-
Reduce the risk of depression and the effects of stress
-
Feel better about themselves
-
Have improved academic performance
Proper Dress for Class - PE DRESS CODE
To promote personal hygiene and safety during PE, a standard dress requirement will be enforced. Each student will be expected to participate in their physical education class wearing their uniform t-shirt which has been marked with their last name. If you do NOT have yours on any given day, it is your responsibility to find your PE teacher, at a time OTHER than 5 minutes into class, to borrow one. It must be returned at the end of class.
1. Black t-shirt with the “Property of Deerfield PE’ sold by the PE department. You can purchase these before or after school.
2. Students are expected to wear either shorts or sweatpants, which will be provided by the student.
3. Tennis/Running type shoes appropriate for physical activity. Shoes must have laces that will be tied during activity.
4. Cost for a uniform t-shirt purchased through the PE department can be bought for $5.00. Lost t-shirts will need to be repurchased prior to the next PE class. (NOT during class but before or after school.)
5. It is highly recommended that all PE clothes be taken home and washed weekly.
6. Students are not to wear their PE uniform t-shirt outside of PE class on a day you have PE. If you do not have PE during a different quarter, FEEL FREE to wear it.
7. All uniforms must be marked with student’s last name using a permanent marker.
8. All students must be in t-shirt uniform. If you cannot afford one, please see your teacher to make arrangements.

Pedometers
Students will be asked to track their activity steps each day during physical education using a pedometer. A pedometer is an intelligent electronic device that measures the distance you travel by foot either by walking, running, playing, or any type of exercise.
Pedometers are beneficial because it can: increase your energy level, be used as self-motivation, reveal how active you really are, and provide a measurable means to reach your exercise goals.
On the first day of class, each student will be given a pedometer #/slot which is to be used every day of class. Students are responsible for reporting/marking their steps at the end of every class on the tracking board. At the end of the quarter, students will be given 45-50 points (depending on days in quarter) for recording their steps at the end of each class period. Any days that are not recorded are a 0. It is the students responsibility to make sure they have a score recorded everyday the pedometers are used. In addition, it is the students’ responsibility to let the teacher now if the battery is dead.
*** STUDENTS LOSING OR BREAKING A PEDOMETER WILL BE CHARGED $10.00. THIS FEE MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO END OF THE QUARTER. GRADE WILL BE WITH-HELD UNTIL PAYMENT IS MADE.

Assignments
Final Exam
There will be a final exam at the end of the quarter.
Partner Warm-Up Assignment
This quarter, you and a partner will need to design and lead an 5-10 minute warm up lesson. This assignment is worth 25 points. Please keep the following in mind when preparing your lesson:
1. Warming up is quite literally the process of "warming up" (i.e., raising your core body temperature, and raising your heart rate). Warm up exercises are a crucial part of any physical education class, sports or fitness training program. The importance of a structured warm up routine should not be under estimated when it comes to the prevention of sports injury.
Muscles need to achieve a good flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients in order to perform well during hard exercise. The warm-up will build up the circulation and prepare the muscles to perform well.
An effective warm up has a number of very important key elements. These elements, or parts, should all be working together to minimize the likelihood of sports injury from physical activity.
2. Your warm-up should be:
- Creative
- Include something to get your classmates heart rates up
- Not be a repeat of another warm-up done in class
3. Please use the internet to gather ideas and be creative. I will provide you with an example warm-up the first week.
4. You must sign up on the calendar in the equipment room with your partner. If you need a partner, or would like to do this on your own, please see me.
5. You MUST turn in a copy of your plan either before you lead or at the end of class. Please see handout by calendar or bulletin board.

Physical Education Make Up Assignments
Whenever you have missed participating in Physical Education class FOR ANY REASON (except funerals), you will be required to make up the class by completing one of the following make up assignment options. All make up work is due 1 week from your date of return. Each assignment must include the date you missed class. EXTRA-CURRICULAR SPORTS DO NOT COUNT AT ANY GRADE LEVEL FOR MAKE UPS. Students may not repeat the same make-up assignment for multiple absences.
1. Attend a DHS/DMS athletic event. Include a written summary including the following information: date and time of game, location, name of teams, score of game, level of game (Varsity, JV, or MS) and complete a description of the game. A signature of a staff member present at the contest is also required.
2. Attend an after school make up session. You must wear PE clothes, arrive on time and complete activity assigned by the teacher. This must be pre-approved by your teacher.
3. Go to E-60 (http://search.espn.go.com/e60/) and view any 2 episodes and complete a write up including the following information: what the stories were about, what you learned, what challenges the individuals faced, what you liked about it and how it relates to PE, fitness, or sport.
4. Design and present a drill or game that pertains to the current unit using information learned in class. Include a written description of the drill/game a diagram of the drill and the proper techniques used to do the skill.
5. Write a paper describing a non-traditional game not covered in this class. The paper should include the basic playing concept and rules of the game. The basic skills of the game should be detailed and explained.
6. Complete a page on current PE unit safety. Be sure to include 10 safety suggestions and an explanation of the rationale behind each.
7. Volunteer to work at a DHS/DMS athletic event. (Help with tickets, supervision, and event set-up or clean up) Staff signature will be required. Working at concessions will NOT be accepted.
8. Volunteer to assist with lunch time intramurals. Officiating a game or helping with set up and organization will be acceptable.
9. Extended absences may be made up with a combination of these assignments or by an individual project (activity journal) approved by your teacher.
10. Students may submit their own make up idea for teacher approval.
