Pedometers
Students will be asked to track their activity steps during physical education using a pedometer. A pedometer is an intelligent electronic device that measures the distance you travel by foot, either by walking, running, playing, or any type of exercise. Pedometers will be passed out before class and collected at the end of class.
*** STUDENTS LOSING OR BREAKING A PEDOMETER WILL BE CHARGED $10.00. THIS FEE MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO END OF QUARTER. GRADE WILL BE WITH-HELD UNTIL PAYMENT IS MADE.
Make Up Assignments
When a student misses participating in Physical Education class FOR ANY REASON, they will be required to make up the class by completing one of the following make up assignment options. EXTRA-CURRICULAR SPORTS DO NOT COUNT AT ANY GRADE LEVEL FOR MAKE UPS.
1. Attend a DHS/DMS athletic event. Include a written summary including the following information: date and time of game, location, name of teams, score of game, level of game (Varsity, JV, or MS) and complete a description of the game. A signature of a staff member present at the contest is also required.
2. Attend an after school make up session. You must wear PE clothes, arrive on time and complete activity assigned by the teacher. This must be pre-approved by your teacher.
3. Go to E-60 (http://search.espn.go.com/e60/) and view any episode and complete a write up including the following information: what the story was about, what you learned, what challenges the individuals faced, what you liked about it and how it relates to PE, fitness, or sport.
4. Design and present a drill or game that pertains to the current unit using information learned in class. Include a written description of the drill/game a diagram of the drill and the proper techniques used to do the skill.
5. Write a paper describing a non-traditional game not covered in this class. The paper should include the basic playing concept and rules of the game. The basic skills of the game should be detailed and explained.
6. Complete a page on current PE unit safety. Be sure to include 10 safety suggestions and an explanation of the rational behind each.

9. Extended absences may be made up with a combination of these assignments or by an individual project (activity journal) approved by your teacher.
10. Students may submit their own make up idea for teacher approval.
Riding for Focus
Middle School Cycling Unit
Rationale for Teaching a Cycling Unit & Permission Slip
Quality physical educations programs are charged to create physically literate students. To be physically literate means more than being physically educated. A physically literate person knows the benefits to be derived from a life of physical activity, that physical needs and benefits differ at different times in life, and that selection of the right kinds and amounts of physical activity impacts the benefits. A physically literate person then is equipped with the tools and confidence to use activity to maximize their health and overall well-being. They are educated consumers of physical activity and physical activity products, able to discern and take control of their personal well-being.
The potential benefits of engaging in moderate levels of physical activity such as cycling is documented and irrefutable. Clinical studies have shown cycling as a tool to improve, fitness, cardiovascular risk factors, and moderation of blood ugars (Oja et al., 2011). Regular participation in moderate intensities of physical activity such as cycling show a relationship with various physical, social, emotional and psychological benefits. Shephard (2008) posits that walking and cycling could provide the opportunity for regular daily physical activity for a large extent of the population, in part because regular physical activity is most sustainable if it can be incorporated into everyday activity.
The case can be made that the unique features of cycling make it a valuable contribution to preparing a physically literate individual when contrasted with other fitness activities. Cycling incorporates the development and maintenance of balance, moderation of speed, and negotiation of position relative to environmental obstructions and other persons. Cycling requires a constant and ongoing analysis of situations and anticipation that is unique from other aerobic activities. It can be argued that these features contribute to the development of cognitive function in young people, and the maintenance of cognitive function in aging adults, in ways that other fitness activities fail to address. Cycling accommodates varying degrees of intensity without changes in force impact on joints.
A cycling unit is a win-win regarding character education. Students learn to prepare for and engage in cycling activities is a safe, responsible way, and treating cycling equipment respectfully. In this unit, they will practice perseverance and learn to manage their own programs. While this contributes to the student’s safe effective participation in cycling, it also develops those positive character traits that can transfer to daily life.
Student’s performances may be assessed through:
-
Performance of cycling skills according to assessment rubrics
-
Regular participation in class activities
-
Completion of worksheets and quizzes
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Physical Education teacher. IF, your child does not know how to ride a bike, or has little to no experience, please contact your child’s Physical Education teacher and we can work to set up special times for private lessons after school.
Thanks!
