COMMUNITY
Deerfield Community Schools is located in Dane County, 20 miles east of Madison, Wisconsin’s state capitol. Deerfield students enjoy small class sizes, hands-on learning experiences, and many opportunities for participation in extra-curricular activities. We have very active parent organizations that encourage student involvement and are very supportive of our schools.
HIGH SCHOOL
Deerfield High School is a comprehensive four-year public high school enrolling 250 students in grades 9-12.
Deerfield has highly-qualified teachers with 43% of staff holding a Master’s degree or higher. Our high school prepares students for college, vocational-technical, university, and the world of work. Students graduate ready to enter higher learning institutes, or, if inclined, with skills that take them from the classroom to the work place.
CURRICULUM
The academic program is organized on a 4X4 block schedule with a music/resource skinny. A full semester course load is equal to 4.5 credits; students take four 83 minute classes and one 44 minute music (band/choir) or an assigned resource class (no credit). Classes are scheduled as quarter or semester blocks. An audition-only Show Choir meets during zero hour for the full year and earns one (1) credit. Block scheduling was instituted in 1999.

AP courses are offered in English Language, English literature, US Government, US History. AP is an open-enrollment program. English 11 Honors is offered as preparation for AP English.

Dual-credit courses through Madison College (MATC) are offered for College Success and Math Concepts & Analysis.

Youth Apprenticeship and Youth Options programs enable juniors and seniors to enroll in college and/or career related courses and earn college credits at local institutions of higher education.

Co-op courses such as AP Calculus and Agriculture courses are offered through a reciprocal partnership with Cambridge High School.
ASSESSMENT
The ACT test is hosted onsite four (4) times during the year. All students take the EXPLORE test in 8th and 9th grade and take the PLAN in 10th grade. The PSAT test is also offered. Other assessments include the state standardized WKCE test given at 10th grade and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) started this year in fall and spring for 9th and 10th grade students.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Seniors are required to complete a portfolio and senior exit interview.
Deerfield requires 28 credits for graduation. Grading scale is a standard 4.0
English – 4.0 Math – 3.0 Social Studies – 3.0
PE – 1. 5 Health – 0.5 Science – 2.0
Computer Science – 0.5 College & Career Readiness – 0. 5
Fine Arts – 4.0 (Computer Science, Art, FACE, Tech Ed., Foreign Language, Music, Business)
Electives – 9.0 (combination of any of the above subject areas)
STUDENT EXTRACURRICULARS
Art Club, Academic Decathlon, Dramatics-Cast, Dramatics-Crew, Cheerleading-Spirit Squad, Solo/Ensemble, Music Festival, Math Team, National Honor Society, Science Club, School Musical, Forensics, Student Council, Yearbook Staff, Weightlifting, Jazz Band, Show Choir, Volleyball, Football, Wrestling, Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Baseball, Cross Country, Track and Field.
THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2011 has received at total of $264,539.00 in scholarships. Of the 68 seniors that graduated, 29 went on to State Universities, 18 to Technical Schools, 5 to private schools, 5 to out-of-state schools, 8 seeking employment, 2 to the military, 1 to Au Pair in Germany. Honor roll of 3.50 or higher was 28/68 students. ACT class average was 22.4.
