MY GOAL AND OBJECTIVE:
To promote wellness, health literacy, and positive health behaviors that will positively impact lifelong health habits in young adults.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
1. Students will be provided materials in order to make good decisions regarding their health and lifestyle.
2. Students will participate in various kinds of activities related to becoming healthy adults.
3. Students will learn to evaluate their health.
4. Student experiences will help determine future health related choices.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
1. All policies and rules established and that are in our policy handbook apply in this classroom and will be reinforced.
· No backpacks or food allowed in the classroom.
· Be in your seat when the bell rings.
· Cell phones are not allowed in the classroom.
· Study when given time.
· No MP3/iPod players or headphones allowed in the classroom.
· In order to use the restroom, go to your locker, get a drink…you must have a pass.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
· Raise your hand to answer a question or share with the class.
· One person speaks at a time please.
· Be respectful – Give it, Get it, Earn it!
· Be open minded, caring, mature, honest, and always agree to disagree.
· Be respectful of school property and use learning materials, resources and technology responsibly. Remember: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Show Restraint.
· Please be aware of all grading expectations when working on an assignment or project. Rubrics or grading guidelines will be provided for each assignment or project.
· DO NOT BE TARDY. You are allowed 1 free tardy, after that you will receive 1 lunch detention each time you are tardy.
MISCELLANEOUS:
· I suggest that you keep all handouts, notes, and returned work in a health notebook. This will help you review for exams and it is a record of your grade. This is a top priority in aiding with your success in this class. Grades typically drop greatly when you lose your daily assignments in this class.
· Projects and homework are due on the assigned date. If you are absent on that day, your project will be due the first day you return at the beginning of class. If students are responsible and come to me, exceptions may be made (printer out of ink, lost assignment, etc.)
· Students are responsible for getting their make-up work from me in cases of illness or other absence. All work must be made up within five days of the absence. Any work that has not been completed within one week of the absence will result in a zero. Please let me know if there are any extenuating circumstances.
· If I feel that you are not taking our class discussions seriously, and are causing others to be embarrassed or uncomfortable, you will be given one warning, and after that one warning, you will be asked to leave. Everyone deserves the right to feel safe, and given a chance to learn. Whether the topic is wellness, suicide, mental health, drugs, or sexually transmitted diseases, each student comes into this class with a different background of knowledge and different life experiences we can all learn from each other.
· No Name Rule: Under no circumstance should student or teacher names be used during class time or class discussions. If this happens, you will automatically be sent to the office. NO WARNINGS! You may say that you have a friend, family member, or neighbor for example, but NO NAMES!
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Each student is expected to do his/her own work. In order to eliminate any confusion about what academic dishonesty includes, the following definitions will apply in health class:
· Knowingly providing your work/answers to another student for them to copy as their own. (notes not included)
· Knowingly copying another student’s work/answers and submitting them as your own.
· Plagiarizing anything from books, magazines, the Internet or any other source already published.
Students will receive a 0 on any assignment/project/test where cheating has occurred and will also receive a referral.
GRADING SCALE: - Here is the grading scale that will be used this quarter. Grade categories include Test/Quizzes, Homework, and Class work; all being equal.
ACADEMIC IMPERATIVE:
All students are expected to come to class prepared, actively participate and complete all assigned work on time.
1. Students with three missing grades or one failing grade on a major assignment/test in a class will be assigned a classroom detention. The purpose of the detention will be to complete the missing work and/or discuss ways to meet the academic expectations of the class.
2. The detention will be assigned by the teacher and served with the teacher.
3. The detention may take place before school, lunch, or after school and will last a minimum of 20 minutes.
4. Participation in extracurricular activities will not excuse a student from detention.
5. Student who fail to serve the detention will be given a warning and make-up date. Continued failure to serve will result in an office referral which may lead to an ISS.
6. Parent contact will be made if a second detention is given from the same classroom teacher.
7. A parent conference will be held if a third detention is given from the same classroom teacher.
