Basic information on guidance lessons
Guidance classes are taught K-6, every other week for 30 minutes. Most lessons are centered around a research based curriculum called Second Step. In general, Second Step is a a way for children to learn the valuable skills of empathy for others, problem solving, and managing emotions. Students also learn how to be a better learner by learning to listen, following directions and self-talk for staying on task. The entire scope and sequence of the Second Step program can be found by following this link: http://www.cfchildren.org/Portals/1/SS_K5/K-5_DOC/K-5_Scope_Sequence_SS.pdf
In addition to these lessons, we will also be exploring stress reduction, mindfulness, career readiness, alcohol and drug awareness, bullying prevention and personal safety. Of course, the 6th graders also learn about the skills necessary to transition to middle school!
