SAFETY PATROL INFORMATION
Safety Patrol is a program to enhance the safety of all students. 6th Grade students assist adult aides and crossing guards in watching students before and after school.
All 6th grade students are eligible to participate in safety patrol, but students are chosen based on their ability to:
- Behave in a responsible manner in and out of class
- Listen to adults in authority
- Communicate with both adults and other students in a respectful way
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS?
|
Any student who meets these requirements and who fills out a signed safety patrol application form will attend a training session (during the regular school day) and will be placed into teams. Teams will be rotated each week, and each family will receive a schedule of when your child has safety patrol duty for the year.
WHAT ARE THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES?
|
Safety patrol members are responsible for reporting to school at 7:35 in the morning, and for staying after school until 3:00 each day they have duty. Patrol members will also have the opportunity of being a captain at least once during the year.
Safety patrol is a lot of work for the students involved. As a reward, a field trip in May is open to all patrol members who are consistently present and on-time at their posts, who treat students and adults with respect, and who are getting their work done at school.
Throughout the year, safety patrollers may be periodically rated by the adult aides they are working with. These ratings will be used to determine if safety patrollers will be able to go on the safety patrol reward field trip in May. Specifically, safety patrol members will be rated on the following criteria:
· Respectful to adults and students
· At their posts on time (7:40 before school and 2:50 after school)
· Doing their jobs while on duty
· Staying at their posts as long as needed (not leaving early)

MY CHILD RIDES THE BUS, OR WE MAY HAVE DIFFICULTY GETTING TO SCHOOL EARLY. CAN HE/SHE STILL PARTICIPATE?
|
I do understand that transportation can be an issue for some families. The bus company would prefer that students not ride the bus on days that they have safety patrol, as there have been issues with holding up the bus in the past. It is possible for students to be in safety patrol for only the mornings or the afternoons if transportation is an issue, we need to know this on your child’s application form. Please also indicate if you would like to car pool with other families in your child’s grade, and I will make every effort to put them on the same team.
