COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Algebra 1 deals with basic concepts of algebra including variables, expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, graphing, and simple polynomials. These topics are integrated with geometry, probability, and statistics in a variety of problem-solving applications.
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
Adequate skills in basic arithmetic including the ability to accurately calculate with decimals, fractions, percents and integers.
REQUIRED MATERIALS: (Bring to Class Everyday)
- Binder or a notebook dedicated for Math ONLY
- Writing Utensil: No Red Pens
- Scientific Calculator: I suggest getting a TI30-XS
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Perform arithmetical operations on real numbers and understand the language of Algebra.
- Simplify linear, quadratic, and polynomial expressions.
- Solve and graph linear equations, linear inequalities, and quadratic equations.
- Model and solve application problems that involve determining the equation or equations
- Understand the rules of Algebra in order to simplify, solve, graph or model algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities.
COURSE OUTLINE: Arrangement subject to change
Unit 1: Linear Expressions, Equations, Inequalities and Functions
Unit 2: Graphing Linear Functions/Inequalities
Unit 3: Writing Linear Functions/Inequalities
Unit 4: Systems of Linear Equations
Unit 5: Exponents and Polynomials
Unit 6: Quadratics and Factoring
Unit 7: Data Analysis
CLASSROOM RESOURCES:
In order to enhance the class, we will use the following resources on a regular basis:
Delta Math – in addition to written notes and practice, we will use Delta to complete online practice and review.
Math is Fun – an interactive site for notes, definitions, and examples
Desmos Activities
RE - TESTING PROCEDURE:
Test retakes are a privilege and will be made available for those students who have completed all of their daily practice for that chapter, but get below an 86% on a test. Any test retake grade higher than an 86% will be capped as an 86% in the grade book so as not to penalize the students who got an A/B on the original test. In order to re-take the test you will need to:
- Have all assigned homework completed from the unit.
- Make test corrections on a separate sheet of paper (show all work)
- Set up a time to meet with the instructor to go over test corrections and schedule a time outside of class to re-take the test
- Re-Take the test prior to the next Unit’s Test Date
Extra Help
Extra help will be available to all interested students either before school, during resource hour, during lunch, or after school. Please let the instructor know ahead of time when needing assistance in order to get the appropriate pass and to allow the instructor to prepare.
