The Deerfield Racquet
On Sunday, March 4th, the Active School Grant hosted the first Deerfield Racquet Sport Tournament. The event was free for Deerfield High School students and community members paid a small entry fee to compete in doubles pickleball, badminton, and racquetball tournaments. Lunch was provided and Best Buy and Subway gift cards were awarded to the top teams in each sport. After many rounds of tough competition, Fred Fry and Justin Annen emerged as winners of both pickleball and badminton. Colin Farnsworth and Matt Jensen took second place in badminton, while Cole Ruby and Adam Dushenski took second place in pickleball. Wes Maier and Alex Anderberg(both Deerfield graduates) won the racquetball tournament with Kyle Olsen and Nick Jensen coming in a close second place. Pat Werk, who has lived in Deerfield for 25 years, saw the advertisement in the Deerfield Independent and jumped at the chance to challenge high school kids in one of her favorite sports, pickleball. She believes that students need to be participating in lifetime activities such as pickleball and was happy to have the opportunity to come play.
