CURRICULUM
In June 2010, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as the new Wisconsin standards for English-Language Arts and Mathematics. The Deerfield Community School District is now in the process of aligning our local curriculum, instruction and assessment with these new standards. DPI has created the following Implementation Plan for development: 2010-2011-Understanding, 2011-2012-Curriculum, 2012-2013-Instruction, Assessment. Links to these standards can be found below.
Wisconsin is also participating in two national projects to develop new common standards for science and social studies. Standards for these two core academic areas are expected to be introduced in the next few years.
What actions has Deerfield taken?
We have begun the Understanding phase of implementation. One of our major initiatives for this school year is to have a K-12 assessment of our current curriculum completed for English-Language Arts and Mathematics.
In August 2010, K-12 teachers in English-Language Arts and Mathematics came together to learn more about the new Common Core State Standards and began working on completing the curriculum assessment tool.
In March 2011, grades 7-12 Social Studies and Science teachers came together for an Early Release session to review the literacy and writing standards related to history, science and technical subjects. These teachers will begin assessing their current curriculum with the new standards as well.
What is the next steps for integration?
The data from the completed assessment tool is being compiled to determine curriculum and resource areas of need. K-12 teachers will come together in the summer of 2011 to discuss and plan for integration of these standards within our curriculum.
